Peter Macfarlane and David Dodunski, the main directors of GHW, are actively involved in the Southland dairy industry and have become acutely aware of the large shortage of skilled dairy workers faced by the farmers throughout the South Island. As a result it was decided to set up a recruitment company, Greener Horizons Workforce (GHW) in March 2007 to assist accredited farmers who are part of a Good Employers Association, in obtaining reliable, hardworking employees for their successful operations. Whilst dairying is our initial focus, we will soon be recruiting skilled individuals into other selected industries in the South Island experiencing shortages.
GHW’s goal is to help skilled immigrants and New Zealanders to settle into a community through orientation and training in a facility where they are housed for two weeks before being settled onto a suitable dairy farm. A number of training days are also provided throughout the year to ensure that staff are knowledgeable and capable of adding value on farm, and are able to gain the skills to move up through the industry. We want to support progression through the industry to share-milking or equity management and the goal of farm ownership.

Background of Directors
Peter grew up in Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa where he obtained a BSc Agricultural Degree majoring in Wildlife Science where he met and married Tammy Cech. After 4 years living and working in game reserves, they spent two years managing a TB free buffalo quarantine program, where buffalo calves were bonded onto jersey cows who acted as surrogate mothers. This hands on interaction sparked a keen interest in dairy cows and caused them to seek dairy farm work in New Zealand where they immigrated in July 2003! After a negative experience with an employment agency they secured work on a large-scale Canterbury farm before shifting to Southland to manage a 420 cow farm a year later. Peter is now operating as a Dexcel Consulting Officer where he is responsible for extending dairy research and best practice to farmers in Southland. Peter and Tammy value people as individuals and gain great fulfilment from helping people and seeing them happy and succeeding! Their desire is to help and support other immigrants to settle into Southland with good employers and working conditions. Peter and Tammy have just had their first child and are happily settled in Winton in sunny Central Southland!David and Kay Dodunski are two of the directors of GHW Ltd. They are dairy farm owners with a passion for the Dairy Industry. Kay was a born and bred “Townie” and has enjoyed her transition into the farming world. David is a born and bred Dairy Farmer after taking a short time off in his younger days to try the building industry but soon realised the land is where he belonged. They have both worked up the ranks in the dairy industry and have experienced both sides of the employee and employer wheel. They are now employers of many people and have seen the scope for some input into the major issue of employment, so when approached by Peter and Tammy Macfarlane, they were more than willing to get involved. They like to look at employment from a holistical point of view by looking at the total package and remuneration for annualised hours of work. They have a family of five children and are big advocates of farming being a lifestyle and not just a job!
Peter and David have an understanding of the need for quality staff in the industry and accredited employers, and are proactive in meeting this need through the introduction of GHW! The main aim is to provide a superior recruitment service for both farmers and employers every time.
