Short-Term Dairy Work Opportunities

Greener Horizons Workforce has been established to look after employees entering the NZ dairy industry. We offer a premiere service which is unparalleled in New Zealand.

If you have a Working Holiday Visa and want to work on a dairy farm then we can help if you meet the following criteria:
  • Hold a valid working holiday visa or NZ passport
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Good health and physically fit.
  • 23-45 years of age
  • No criminal convictions
  • Good positive can-do attitude.
  • Willing to learn.
  • Commitment to work with us for at least 8 weeks
  • Be totally honest in your application and intentions.

We have good employers offering short-term or temporary positions on South Island Dairy farms and can help provide you with the pre-employment training to get you off to a good start.

You must Expect:

  • Work up to 70 hours per week in August – September
  • Physically demanding work with high efficiency expectations
  • Put cups on up to 1000 cows per day, averaging 6-10 seconds per cow and be in the shed for up to 8 hours per day
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Early starts and late finishes (4am – 6pm)
  • To be expected to learn, use your initiative and take responsibility

  • Isolated conditions and cold weather:

  • To be situated 30-45 minutes from nearest town
  • Single or shared accommodation on farm or close to the farm
  • To work in the South Island of New Zealand
  • Cold and Wet weather with snow and frosts in autumn, winter & spring
  • Annual leave after 12 months (usually June or July)

    Cultural Differences:

  • Swearing
  • To work with other nationalities
  • Be the only person of your nationality on the farm
  • Speak only English on the farm
  • To be taxed on your income at approximately 20%
  • To pay for phone, food, power, and transport

What we Offer:

  • A good workplace:
    • Placement with good employment conditions
    • Min roster of 12days-on-and-2 days-off plus public holidays
    • Time off at full pay to attend our Training days (1 / 3 months)
  • Fair reward for the work you do:
    • Market related hourly rate ($12.75 - $15) including holiday pay PLUS
    • Pay for the hours you work.
    • An average of at least 30 - 55hrs/week
    • A minimum of 30hrs/week
    • Free furnished accommodation
    • $15/week wet-weather gear allowance
  • Pre-employment orientation & training
    • 3-days On-farm training with a GHW accredited farmer with food and accommodation provided
    • We offer a discount on wet weather gear at commencement of training.
    • Orientation into NZ dairy industry
    • List of NZ dairy terminology to help communication
    • Information booklets and resources on New Zealand dairying provided
  • Support
    • Assistance if you have problems with your employer
    • We provide you with a list of other employees of the same nationality so you have some contacts
    • We provide a list of local support contacts
    • Advice on budgeting
    • Advice on career progression opportunities
  • Assistance gaining a permanent position
    • If you perform to our standards and want to remain longer term in New Zealand we can assist you gaining a permanent job offer in the dairy industry.
    • We offer a contract to take care of you and provide you with a good employer for 2 seasons.
    • We organize and pay for your work permit ($280)
    • We organize and pay for your study permit to obtain a NZ accredited qualification
    • A $800 breach of contract fee if you do not work the term agreed to.
    • Deductions for GHW service fee from your bank account
    • Attend training and orientation
    • Accurately completing timesheets and having them signed off weekly by your employer.
    • Perform your work to a high standard of efficiently.
    • Meeting all IRD and immigration requirements
    • Not obtaining a permanent position independently or through another agency for a minimum of 2 months following completion of short-term placements through Greener Horizons Workforce.

    Our Fees:

    Short-term Employees:
  • $100+GST/week (to be paid in installments weekly)

  • Permanent Positions following short-term placement:
  • $2000 + GST (to be paid in installments over first 4 months)
